HOMEGROWN REVOLUTION - Radical Change Taking Root

This is so inspiring to me. The Dervaes family in Pasadena Ca. has farmed their entire front and back yard with edible landscape. I also love their website, click here to view it.

Wow, that is so cool! I wonder what my neighbors would think about that!

I really liked this. I think houses with gardens -- vegetables, too! -- are so visually appealing.

For my own yard, however, I could not convince my husband that our two-foot wide parking strip (between sidewalk and street) could be prime vegetable space. It gets the best light of anywhere in the yard, and is also flatter than anywhere else. And when you battle a slope elsewhere, that's a big concern.

My husband's reasons against veggies there were varied, one being that he didn't want passersby to take the harvest. Indeed, that was a very reason why I wanted to do it! I envisioned a garden for the neighborhood, maybe with a cute little sign saying, "You're welcome to pick as many veggies as weeds you pull. Enjoy!" . Oh, well. We compromised on water-wise perennials, but I'm going to sneak in some broccoli seeds for a fall crop!

I did make a vegetable patch right up next to the house with four tomatoes, a big yellow squash plant, and pumpkin vines. I love it!
