I noticed that it uses PVC pipe. I've read that it will degrade your plastic faster and that the plastic's warranty will be voided if the two come into contact.

Rachel, thanks for letting me know about that. Is there something other than PVC that I could use instead?

We had a hoop house fiasco similar to the collapse post on that blog. Only our happened several times. You can read about it on my blog under the garden tour. For anyone thinking of building one in a snowy area, I suggest 2" pvc.

I would love to make my own hoop house. The comments in his article and the coment from teekaroo are really helpful because we get a lot of snow. But I'm wondering how well an unheated house can do in zone 5 (New England).

Meg- I do think it would still do well in zone 5. Have you read the books by Elliot Coleman? He gardens year round in Maine using unheated hoop houses and cold frames. Just keep in mind the snow load when building.

I just noticed this posting and I have a little bit of advice. My partner and I just built a greenhouse almost identical to this one. PVC is the best to use and over time it will degrade the plastic, to prevent that just paint the PVC pipe with a layer of white primer. You can also add an extra layer of plastic for insulation and to prevent breakdown.
