As for the tomato I planted in the ground, she has definately seen better days. It is a mystery what actually happened to this one, the stem was broken, I tried tying it to a stake in the ground, but it was 'fruitless'. So, it looks like just after 2 weeks, upside down tomato won the experiment. Not exactly the results I thought it would be, and I definately didn't expect to be done with the experiment this soon. Luckily I have 2 other brandywine tomato plants just like it, that I can compare to the upside down tomato. But, to be fair for the experiment, the upside down tomato won.

My tomatoes aren't doing so hot in the ground either! I think I need to move them to the shade or something. It's been too hot. I've made it a point to go out and water everything before 8am; just to give it an extra watering. We'll see if that works. Tomatoes are not my thing to grow, I guess. Upside down tomatoes are going to have to be the way to go next year!
Brandi, you can totally do tomatoes, I have 15 tomato plants this year, all 9 different varieties and they are doing quite well. Since we are just a few blocks away, I know that climate isn't playing a big part in the difference.
A few tips with tomatoes:
They don't like their leaves getting wet, so make sure when you are watering, it is just getting at the base of the plant. They also do better with deep waterings. Stick your finger in the ground up to your second knuckle, if it is wet, don't water that day, if it is dry, give it a nice deep watering. Tomato leaves can turn yellow if they are over watered, you will want to pick off those leaves to prevent disease.
