There is an old saying that goes:
A swarm in May is worth a load of hay;
A swarm in June is worth a silver spoon;
But a swarm in July is not worth a fly’
for it is then too late
to store up honey before the flowers begin to fade.
But we are giving it a try anyways.

ReplyDeleteAll this talk of bees after my husband just spent the whole day of my daughter's birthday and my birthday (we are right in a row) laying on the couch, all swollen from a sting to the eyelid is too much. I wonder if we will really try it or not.
We really want to try bees (I love honey, and there is no local ordinance that prohibits them), but I worry so much about his allergy.

ReplyDeleteWOW...that was way cool! We are a military family and we are up for orders, but if we get to do 4 more years here, we hope to add bees. Our neighbor has been a bee keeper for years and wants to teach us. We got a handful of chickens in the spring of 2010 and love them...we also have a decent sized garden. We're only practicing now, one day we hope to expand...but for now we'll enjoy being "backyard farmers"! You guys inspire us and we just love all the information that you share! Thanks a bunch!

ReplyDeleteJust put out extra sugar water for them...I doubt with this extreme heat and drought going on there are many flowers blooming for any bees right now.

ReplyDeleteYeah!!! I'm so excited that you found a hive body!! Are you using the frames where the comb is drawn out in plastic? Or is it just plastic foundation where the bees have to draw out the comb? If it's the later, the bees have a ton of work to do so keep feeding them. Looks like y'all know what you're doing though. Can't wait to see how they're doing in the next week or two. Exciting stuff! :)

ReplyDeleteWe haven't seen any swarms around our hive, maybe I should tell the neighbors to let me know if they have any. My Mister needs to get another hive built for just in case. We're using a top bar hive, and I don't think there's anywhere around here that sells them. :)
I'm impressed that he installed bees with short sleeves! It looks like they slid out of the plastic box better than the package bees did.
Well if a swarm in july is truly worth a fly, then I am in for it too, I am starting a bee hive this week. In this July heat wave. Well two things will happen, one they will do fine, or two I will have crispy critters by August 1. LOL
