Raw Milk Taste Test

Michael and I ventured and bought our first gallon of raw milk. Even after reading The Raw Milk Revolution, I was still a little nervous about it. First off, here in Utah you have to sign a waiver stating you understand all the things that could possibly go wrong if you drink it, including death. That is a little terrifying! Okay, not a little terrifying, really terrifying. After reading the facts about raw milk, I realized that it isn't any more dangerous than eating a lot of the other foods we are consuming, namely lunch meat.

Michael and I first did our own taste test and I definately could tell a difference. The pasteurized milk had a chemically (is that a word?) aftertaste. The raw milk had a nice smooth almost grassy taste to it, probably because the cows are grass fed. We waited a day to make sure we didn't get sick, then gave it to the kids. Michael and I were just as nervous to eat our very first egg produced by the chickens. It is laughable that we were so scared to eat our free range chicken eggs. Now we are egg snobs and hate it when the girls aren't producing enough and we have to buy store bought eggs.

The kids were sure that they would hate the raw milk. Disregard the fact that my kids don't know how to close their stinking eyes!

  1. We got a kick out of this! Great idea to get kids over the mental block of drinking raw milk. ( Seems like they thought B was the raw product until you told them).

    YEAH for Raw Milk!

  2. Amy, they did think that they had chosen the pasteurized milk. They were so sure that they were going to hate raw milk!

  5. Maybelline, it isn't bottled in glass, I would love it if it was though. I would love to return my glass bottles for milk filled ones and cut down on the waste.

That's my husband for you! The kids were so sure they would hate raw milk, when they didn't even know what it means.

  7. That's just awesome! We are "milk-free" at our home just because we are all allergic to milk, except my hubby. Allergic as in need to go to the hopital kind of allergic. Severe! This was really cute!

  8. Marisa,

What a great article and video? I love it! I think it was disavdvantageous to the pasturized milk to have 1% fat instead of whole milk 3 1/2% fat). However, I still think everyone would like raw milk better. I like the grassy taste. And you are right - that comes because the cows were on pasture. Nearly all pasturized milk is a blend from farms where the cows are fed various silages (corn, small grain, haylages), hays (legumes, grasses), and concetrates (soybean, corn, barley, cottonseed, canola seed). What I like about raw milk is that you usually get is from a single farm and because it is not a blend of many farms, the taste can change slighty over time as the farmer feeds the cows different ration (different types of pastures, harvested feeds). I think milk from a glass jug tastes better as Maybelline alludes. So what are your raw milk laws in Utah? they sound much more friendly than most states.

  9. Dale, you are right, the raw milk has an unfair advantage with the higher fat content. I will have to do a re-test.

  10. I would love to try raw milk... I don't know what the laws are in Alabama though. This is something worth checking in to...

DH was raised on a dairy farm in Kentucky and has had raw milk plenty of times to say the least LOL

Love your blog and all your posts! Very interesting!

  12. Hmm. The idea of raw milk isn’t really bad after all. Although I was imagining the taste of kids to it. There are some still I believe who preferred drinking milk that are in bottled. Thanks for posting the video.

  13. Hi,
I live in Utah also. About 6 months ago we got chickens. We have 5 ladies and a banty rooster - which I totally recommend for a rooster, because they are really, really small, quiet, and nice to the hens and they produce more eggs having a man around the house. Anyway, I'm very interested in raw milk and was wondering who is your source or how I could find out where to get some high quality raw milk? Thank you! By the way, your family is adorable!

  14. mountainhippie,

Great job on the chickens! I haven't had a rooster yet since we live in the suburbs.

We get our milk from www.huckleberrydairy.com, you have to pre-order it a few days ahead and pay with paypal. The cows are in Mt. Pleasant, but they have a store they ship it to for pick up in Pleasant Grove.

There is also a place in Orem that we have gotten milk from, I will check on the name and get back to you on it.

    Good luck!

  17. I bought some raw goat milk from Drake Farm in West Jordan on Redwood road to feed to our baby bucks before we got our female goat who is milking now. We got some cheese, yogurt and pasterized goat milk. The kids loved all of it. They sell ice cream, lip balm, and goat manure too!!

  18. Hey Tami,

Yeah, we've done a taste test of their stuff as well. I have it on video somewhere. I will have to try and find it. We've tried some of their cheese and their yogurt. I need to come and check out your backyard farm!
